Keratoconnus

High astigmatism and curvature of front surface

Keratoconnus

The front surface, called the cornea is a clear spherical surface that is important for vision.

If this structure thins, changes shapes or degenerates then significant vision problems will occur due to light being jumbled even before it can enter the eye and be absorbed.

Keratoconnus is when the structure itself is thinned and the curvature becomes more point like. Not to be confused with a "football" shaped eye, this often will lead to high astigmatism prescriptions.

Patients often will state their vision has worsened especially in the dark.
They will have high astigmatism that can change over time.

There is now a preventive treatment patients can do if we suspect keratoconnus, that is corneal cross-linking. This involves using eye drops and curing them onto the cornea to strengthen it. While this can't reduce a prescription, it will help stabilize it and prevent the curvature from getting distorted further.

Mild forms of keratoconnus can still be treated with glasses. As keratoconnus gets worse, the need for contacts increases. From traditional soft contact lens to hard gas permeable lens. If the cornea curvature is so drastic then scleral contact lens would be used.

We are happy to help these patients achieve the best vision possible via these methods
